Brownstone is a brown Triassic sandstone which was once a popular building material. While brownstone is often popularly associated in the United States of America with New York City and Chicago, the stone was used widely around the world before losing popularity around 1900 in part due to rapid failures of carved surface details in the weathering process. The quarries used for the early brownstones of New York City were in New Jersey, and in the Connecticut River area. Brownstone with qualities approaching granite is currently being imported from Germany.
The Avondale section of Nutley, New Jersey was home to one such quarry. Jobs at the quarry supported a sizeable portion of the Italian and Irish immigrants in Nutley at the turn of the century. This quarry was later home to the Nutley Velodrome.
In New York City, a "brownstone" is understood to be a terrace or rowhouse clad in brownstone. New York City brownstones tend to be found in certain older neighborhoods, which are perhaps most common in Brooklyn. For example, the neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant has the largest inventory of brownstones in the entire City of New York, followed closely by Park Slope. In Chicago, brownstones are found mostly on the north side of the city. Many brownstones have been renovated in recent years, leading to (and/or as a result of) gentrification in areas like Park Slope, Bedford Stuyvesant and Fort Greene. On the popular 1980's-'90s American television program The Cosby Show, the affluent Huxtable family, the show's central characters, lived in a Brooklyn brownstone.
The term Brownstone may also be used as slang for heroin, particularly in the United States; "Mr. Brownstone" is a Guns N' Roses song about heroin use.

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please.
The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

An old man woke up early in order to pray the Fajr prayer in the masjid. He got dressed, made his ablution and was on his way to the masjid. On his way to the masjid, the man fell and his clothes got dirty. He got up, brushed himself off, and headed home. At home, he changed his clothes, made his ablution, and was, again, on his way to the masjid.
On his way to the masjid, he fell again and at the same spot! He, again, got up, brushed himslef off and headed home. At home he, once again, changed his clothes, made his ablution and was on his way to the masjid.
On his way to the masjid, he met a man holding a lamp. He asked the man of his identity and the man replied "I saw you fall twice on your way to the masjid, so I brought a lamp so I can light your way." The first man thanked him and the two were on their way to the masjid.
Once at the masjid, the first man asked the man with the lamp to come in and pray Fajr with him. The second man refused. The first man asked him a couple more times and, again, the answer was the same. The first man asked him why he did not wish to come in and pray. The man replied "I am Satan." The man was shocked at this reply. Shaitan went on to explain,
"I saw you on your way to the masjid and it was I who made you fall. When you went home, cleaned yourself and went back on your way to the masjid, Allah forgave all of your sins. I made you fall a second time, and even that did not encourage you to stay home, but rather, you went back on your way to the masjid. Because of that, Allah forgave all the sins of the people of your household. I was afraid if i made you fall one more time, then Allah will forgive the sins of the people of your village, so I made sure that you reached the masjid safely."
So do not let Satan benefit from his actions. Do not put off a good that you intended to do as you never know how much reward you might receive from the hardships you encounter while trying to achieve that good. During the claiming process Technorati will give you a snippet of code which you have to paste in a Html/Javascript Page Element in the sidebar. Having done this go back to technorati and click on Verify so that Technorati spiders your blog. "Medicine man" is an English term used to describe Native American spiritual figures; such individuals are often viewed by scholars concerned with these matters as being analogous to shamans. The term "medicine man" suffers from being a term applied to a central figure in Native American community life by people of a radically different culture, a culture whose members might easily conceive the Native American practices to be antithetical to their own deeply held religious beliefs.
The 1954 version of Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, reflects the poorly grounded perceptions of the people whose use of the term effectively defined it for the people of that time: "a man supposed to have supernatural powers of curing disease and controlling spirits." The definition insinuates that the so-called "medicine men" falsely claim to have the power to cure disease, and falsely claim that their supposed powers have a supernatural basis. In effect, such definitions were not explanations of what these "medicine men" were to their own communities, but instead reported on the consensus of socially and psychologically remote observers when they tried to categorize these individuals. The term "medicine man," like the term Shaman, has been criticized by Native Americans, and various specialists in the fields of religion and anthropology. Role in Native SocietyThe primary function of these "medicine men" (who are not always male) is to secure the help of the spirit world, including the Great Spirit (Wakan Tanka in the language of the Lakota Sioux), for the benefit of the community.
Sometimes the help sought can be for the sake of healing disease, sometimes it can be for the sake of healing the psyche, sometimes the goal is to promote harmony between human groups or between humans and nature. So the term "medicine man" is not entirely inappropriate, but it greatly oversimplifies and also skews the depiction of the people whose role in society complements that of the chief. These people are not the Native American equivalent of the Chinese "barefoot doctors", herbalists, or of the emergency medical technicians who ride our rescue vehicles.
To be recognized as the one who performs this function of bridging between the natural world and the spiritual world for the benefit of the community, an individual must be validated in his role by that community. One who carries an I.D. which says "Medicine Man" does not qualify in this instance. Neither does one who receives a "vision" from a long dead Native American whose language the receiver neither speaks nor understands. On the contrary, most medicine men and women study their art either through a medicine society such as the Navajo Blessingway, or the Ani-Stohini/Unami Morning Song Way or apprentice themselves to a teacher for twenty-35 years or both.[citation needed]
One of the best sources of information on this subject is the story of a Lakota (Sioux) wicasa wakan ("spirit man") named John Fire Lame Deer, recorded with his cooperation in a book called Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions, by Richard Erdoes. Sometimes the help sought can be for the sake of healing disease, sometimes it can be for the sake of healing the psyche, sometimes the goal is to promote harmony between human groups or between humans and nature. So the term "medicine man" is not entirely inappropriate, but it greatly oversimplifies and also skews the depiction of the people whose role in society complements that of the chief. These people are not the Native American equivalent of the Chinese "barefoot doctors", herbalists, or of the emergency medical technicians who ride our rescue vehicles.
To be recognized as the one who performs this function of bridging between the natural world and the spiritual world for the benefit of the community, an individual must be validated in his role by that community. One who carries an I.D. which says "Medicine Man" does not qualify in this instance. Neither does one who receives a "vision" from a long dead Native American whose language the receiver neither speaks nor understands. On the contrary, most medicine men and women study their art either through a medicine society such as the Navajo Blessingway, or the Ani-Stohini/Unami Morning Song Way or apprentice themselves to a teacher for twenty-35 years or both.[citation needed]
One of the best sources of information on this subject is the story of a Lakota (Sioux) wicasa wakan ("spirit man") named John Fire Lame Deer, recorded with his cooperation in a book called Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions, by Richard Erdoes. On a broader scale, Mircea Eliade's Shamanism puts the whole area of religious experience and practice into a broad historical and ethnographic context.

Google is a fan of new,unique content and it regularly keeps enhancing,modifying its algorithms in order to crawl new and quality content on WWW.So if you are a blogger or own a website,be original.

Knowing high paying keywords is very crucial as AdSense contextual ads are generated on the keywords which you might have used in your article.It is a good practice to analyze these keywords at least once a week and not less than thrice a month.Keep updating your posts to target AdSense ads.Refer my SEO post to check out the ways to research on Keywords related to your website content.Google Suggest and Keyword Discovery are two free tools which may help you to decide on keywords to choose.It is important to pick a keyoword which is uniques,good priced and less fought for amongst publishers.
2. It is very important, how do you present advertisements to you target audience.Create channels for each type and format(Text Links ads,Skyscrapper,Horizontal,Vertical etc.) of ads to give you an insight on performance of each format.Blend these ads with the layout and presentation of your blog and website theme.Ads should not stand out from your website but compliment the contents of your website.
3. Avoid making pages which simply shows ads,it not only creates a bad reputation of yours as a publisher amongst your audience but also against Google policies.
4. Keep changing placements of your ads,be innovative to increase CTR of your pages.Make your pages clean,clutter-free and place ads which makes their purpose most fruitful.There is no hard and fast rule of how you can generate more clicks from your ads.Keep experimenting with integrating Channels for getting better results.General guides for ad placements which work well,but surely not a guarantee of continued CTR increase:
a.Skyscrappers best suits on the left side navigation bar.
b.Link ads depending upon format may best be suited either on top of page or in right side bar(square format).
c.Place ads between your contents.You will have to make changes to your template in case of blogs, for which there are lot of websites providing you hack.
d.Do not make lengthy pages as most of web-surfers hate browsing down the long pages.It is better you distribute information into multiple pages and link them up.
e.Place Google Search Ad either at top or in right side navigation bar.
f.Refer following map from 'Google AdSense Help' website which gives detail on positioning of Google Ads within a blog.

AdWord KeywordTool helps you in finding out values of phrases and keywords associated with your business.I will not write much here in detail as I have covered the same in my previous post.Google AdSense Sandbox is tool that lets you punch in keywords and see the results right away... in every different format of AdSense unit.
6. Ensure pinging service is enabled to maintain the consistency of traffic to your website.Use multiple pinging services like:
Pingoat
Autopinger
In Blogger enable 'Send Pings' by setting it to 'Yes' in Settings-Publishing tab.
7. Avoid filtering of your ads.As filtering helps in avoiding unwanted ads but it decreases the number of ads shown.Less ads may trigger less CTR but it is not a hard and fast rule.A reader must feel an urge for ad click as an extension of information or service that your website is providing in.
8. According to AdSense CTR =[(No of Clicks on Ads)/(Total ad/ad unit/page Impressions)]*100.
It is very important to know that one must never ever discuss one's CTR in public forums as this leads to breach of Google policy.
For High CTR one needs more clicks and less page impressions.A high traffic to ones site is not a guarantee for high CTR.I explain it with one example:
If you have a low traffic website,say only 10 visits a day and you show only 1 Google ad and which results in 4 clicks then on this day your CTR will be 40%
But if you have a high traffic,say 100 visits and you show 1 Google ad and which results in 4 clicks then on this day your CTR will be 4%.
One shouldn't be aiming for at target figure at all, one should be aiming to improve to whatever level is possible with one's site.Make few minor changes to layout and styling which my result in good CTR.
I think it $$ which everyone is interested in not the CTR,you simply cannot buy anything from those CTRs.So who cares as long as $$ are coming in.
9. The page impressions differ from ad unit impressions. If multiple ad units are present on a page,only a single page impression will be logged when a page with Google ads loads, irrelevant of the number of ad units.It is significant you exploit Google policies related to number of ads per page to the maximum of your benefit,so whenever a new design experiment, design a custom report for that experiment.You can make multiple custom reports and save them for quick access in the future.
10. Incorporate Referral products ad and Google search ad in your blog/website to increase your earnings.

A Problem--> story
Two men met at a bus stop and struck up a conversation.
One of them kept complaining of family problems. Finally the other man
said: "You think you have family problems? Listen to my situation. A few
years ago I met a young widow with a grown up daughter. We got married
and I got myself a step-daughter. Later, my father married my
step-daughter. That made my step daughter my step-mother. And my father

A large number of borrowers in the California mortgage industry seem to refinance their mortgages using a Pay Option adjustable rate mortgage (ARM). With this kind of an ARM you can get full control over your monthly mortgage payments.
The Pay Option ARM provides you with the choice to make low monthly-deferred interest payments or an interest-only option along with the 15 year amortized payment and 30 year amortized payment options. It benefits all kinds of borrowers, especially self-employed or commissioned borrowers and those who are in such a financial position that does not allow them to go after huge payments. I am prevented from making additional money to continue making my monthly payment to Colorado Housing and Finance Authority as a hardship loan due to multiple operations. I have lived here 24 years. I have considered refinance wih CHFA but concerned they might say no and request sign off of my loan because my financial income has recently changed due to the operations and inability to earn more money as the loan was originally set up with. Reverse mortgage or any similar program for "non senior" but permanently disabled would help.

What mesothelioma is
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer. It is a cancer of mesothelial cells. These cells cover the outer surface of most of our internal body organs, forming a lining that is sometimes called the mesothelium. So this is where this type of cancer gets its name.

The pleura
The tissues lining (or covering) the lungs are called the pleura. There are two pleura. These can be called pleural membranes. The gap between them is called the pleural space. The pleura are fibrous sheets. They help to protect the lungs. They produce a lubricating fluid that fills the gap between the two pleura. This helps the lungs to move smoothly in the chest when they are inflating and deflating as we breathe.
Mesothelioma is most often diagnosed in the pleura. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. Because it is so close, pleural mesothelioma can also affect the sheet of tissue covering the heart - the pericardium. Doctors call the pericardium the lining, although it is on the outside of the heart. It protects the heart and allows it to move smoothly within the sac that surrounds it. So it does much the same job for the heart as the pleura do for the lungs.
The peritoneum
The tissue lining the abdomen is called the peritoneum. It helps to protect the contents of the abdomen. It also produces a lubricating fluid. This helps the organs to move smoothly inside the abdomen as we move around.
Mesothelioma of the tissues lining the abdominal cavity is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. It is much less common than pleural mesothelioma.
It is unusual for mesothelioma to spread to other parts of the body. But if it does, it does not usually cause troublesome symptoms.
Benign mesothelioma
There is a form of non cancerous (benign) mesothelioma that can develop in the lining of the lungs, or in the lining of the reproductive organs. It can occur in either men or women. These non cancerous tumours are very rare and we don't cover them in this section of CancerHelp UK.

Mesothelioma is quite a rare cancer but it is becoming more common. Just over 2,100 people were diagnosed with mesothelioma in the UK in 2003. There are about 4 times as many cases in men as in women. This is probably because many cases have been caused by exposure to asbestos at work. Asbestos and mesothelioma
Unusually for cancer, we do know what causes the majority of cases of mesothelioma. It is most often linked to exposure to asbestos. We have known of a link between asbestos and lung disease since the beginning of the 18th century. But the link with mesothelioma has only been known since the 1960's. Unfortunately, the number of cases of mesothelioma in the UK each year is expected to rise sharply over the next 20 years because of the heavy use of asbestos in industry from the end of the second world war up until the mid 1970s.
Between 7 and 8 out of every 10 people (70–80%) diagnosed with mesothelioma say they have been in contact with asbestos. Your risk is greater if you were exposed to large amounts of it from an early age for a very long period of time. But there are some patients that say they have no history of any heavy exposure to asbestos.
Remember: Many people who develop mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure may be eligible for compensation. You should talk to a solicitor about this as early as possible. Your specialist doctor or nurse may be able to give you some information on this from their dealings with other mesothelioma patients. What is asbestos?
Asbestos is an insulating material that is heat and fire resistant. In the past, asbestos was used widely in the

* Ship building industry
* Manufacture of household appliances
* Motor industry
* Power stations
* Telephone exchanges
So most cases of mesothelioma occur in men who have worked in manufacturing using asbestos or used asbestos products, particularly in construction or engineering. The use of asbestos was very heavy in the years after the war (after 1945). Mesothelioma may not develop until 15 - 40 years after you have been exposed to asbestos, which is why we are seeing an increase in cases now. The number of cases is expected to peak around 2020 and then start to decline.
There are three main types of asbestos: blue, brown and white. Blue and brown asbestos are strongly linked with mesothelioma. They have been banned since the late 1980's and cannot be imported into the UK. White asbestos is now also thought to be harmful. The use of all asbestos was banned in 1999 in the UK.
How does asbestos cause mesothelioma?
Asbestos is made up of tiny fibres. You can breathe these fibres in when you come into contact with asbestos. The fibres work their way into the pleura, lining the lung. They irritate the pleura and damage the cells that the pleura are made of. Some of the fibres that have been breathed in can be coughed up and swallowed. This is probably the cause of peritoneal mesothelioma.
If you have been exposed to asbestos, your family may also have been exposed. Asbestos fibres can be carried home on your clothes. Research studies have confirmed that the family of people exposed to asbestos also have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma.
Radiation
Pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma has been known to develop after exposure to a type of radiation called thorium dioxide (Thorotast). This was used until the 1950's in some X-ray tests.
Other chemicals
A mineral found in Turkey called Zeolite may cause mesothelioma.
The SV40 virus
There has been some research into a virus called SV40 (the SV stands for 'simian virus'). There is a lot of dispute amongst scientists about this and it isn't generally accepted as a cause. It seems more likely that the virus doesn't cause mesothelioma. It is possible that SV40 may help to increase risk if you've been exposed to another more major risk factor. Doctors call this a 'co-factor'. But SV40 certainly hasn't been proved to be a co-factor so far. In any case, it is far less important a risk factor than asbestos.
Screening for mesothelioma
Screening means testing people for early stages of a disease before they have any symptoms. There is no screening programme for mesothelioma in the UK. Before screening for any type of cancer can be carried out, doctors must have an accurate test to use. The test must be reliable in picking up cancers that are there. And it must not give a positive result in people who do not have cancer.
If screening were to be introduced for mesothelioma, the test would have to be simple, quick and not too expensive. Diagnosing mesothelioma can be difficult. The usual tests for lung diseases often appear to be negative with mesothelioma.
As only about 2,000 cases are diagnosed each year, it is not sensible to screen everyone in the country for such a rare disease.
It would be more cost effective to screen people who are thought to be at a higher risk of mesothelioma. But to do that, we have to be alioma. But if you have these symptoms, see your doctor. This is particularly important if you have been exposed to asbestos in the past.

Types of mesothelioma
There are 2 main types of mesothelioma
* Pleural mesothelioma
* Peritoneal mesothelioma
The pleural type grows in the tissues covering the lungs. The peritoneal type grows in the tissue lining the inside of the abdomen (tummy). Pleural mesothelioma is much more common than peritoneal mesothelioma.
Between 7 and 8 out of 10 (70-80%) cases of mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma is much less common, making up between 1 and 2 out of every 10 cases (10 - 20%).
Cell types
Mesothelioma is also grouped according to how the cells look under a microscope. When mesothelioma is grouped this way, there are 3 types
* Epitheloid
* Sarcomatoid or fibrous
* Mixed type (also called Biphasic type)
Between 5 and 7 out of 10 cases (50-70%) of mesothelioma diagnosed are the epitheloid type.
Between 7 and 20 out of every 100 cases (7 – 20%) of mesothelioma diagnosed are sarcomatoid type.
Between 20 and 35 out of every 100 cases (20 – 35%) of mesothelioma diagnosed are mixed and have both epitheloid and sarcomatoid cells.
These types of mesothelioma cells can further divide into other types of cancerous cells called
* Clear cell
* Small cell
* Acinar cell
* Tubopapillary cell
With so many different types of cells capable of developing into mesothelioma, it makes it very difficult to diagnose this disease.

About the guidelines
It can be very difficult for GPs to decide who may have a suspected cancer and who may have something much more minor that will go away on its own.
With many symptoms, it is perfectly right that your GP should ask you to wait to see if they get better or respond to treatment such as antibiotics. If GPs referred everyone who came to see them to a specialist immediately, the system would get jammed and those needing urgent appointments wouldn't be able to get them.
There are particular symptoms that mean your GP should refer you to a specialist straight away. NICE (The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) have produced guidelines for GPs to help them decide which patients need to be seen urgently by a specialist. These Government guidelines on referrals for lung cancer, which includes mesothelioma, were revised in 2005.
The guidelines say that, with some symptoms, you should be sent for an urgent chest X-ray. If that shows anything abnormal, then you should get an appointment to see a specialist. You should ideally see a specialist within two weeks of going to the GP.
There are no guidelines for seeing a specialist for peritoneal mesothelioma. If you know you have been exposed to asbestos in the past, and have unexplained symptoms, you should see your doctor.
When you might need an urgent chest X-ray
You should have an urgent chest X-ray if you have been exposed to asbestos in the past and have any of these symptoms
* New chest pain
* Difficulty breathing
* Unexplained symptoms that last for more than 3 weeks, such as shoulder pain, cough or weight loss
Guidelines for urgent referral
According to Department of Health guidelines, you should ideally get an appointment within 2 weeks for an urgent referral.
You should ideally see a specialist urgently if you have been exposed to asbestos in the past and have recently developed chest pain and shortness of breath.
What to do if you are still worried
If you are concerned that your GP is not taking your symptoms as seriously as you think he or she should, you could print this page and take it along to an appointment. What mesothelioma is
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer. It is a cancer of mesothelial cells. These cells cover the outer surface of most of our internal body organs, forming a lining that is sometimes called the mesothelium. So this is where this type of cancer gets its name.

The pleura
The tissues lining (or covering) the lungs are called the pleura. There are two pleura. These can be called pleural membranes. The gap between them is called the pleural space. The pleura are fibrous sheets. They help to protect the lungs. They produce a lubricating fluid that fills the gap between the two pleura. This helps the lungs to move smoothly in the chest when they are inflating and deflating as we breathe.
Mesothelioma is most often diagnosed in the pleura. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. Because it is so close, pleural mesothelioma can also affect the sheet of tissue covering the heart - the pericardium. Doctors call the pericardium the lining, although it is on the outside of the heart. It protects the heart and allows it to move smoothly within the sac that surrounds it. So it does much the same job for the heart as the pleura do for the lungs.
The peritoneum
The tissue lining the abdomen is called the peritoneum. It helps to protect the contents of the abdomen. It also produces a lubricating fluid. This helps the organs to move smoothly inside the abdomen as we move around.
Mesothelioma of the tissues lining the abdominal cavity is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. It is much less common than pleural mesothelioma.
It is unusual for mesothelioma to spread to other parts of the body. But if it does, it does not usually cause troublesome symptoms.
Benign mesothelioma
There is a form of non cancerous (benign) mesothelioma that can develop in the lining of the lungs, or in the lining of the reproductive organs. It can occur in either men or women. These non cancerous tumours are very rare and we don't cover them in this section of CancerHelp UK.
Mesothelioma risks and causes
Mesothelioma is quite a rare cancer but it is becoming more common. Just over 2,100 people were diagnosed with mesothelioma in the UK in 2003. There are about 4 times as many cases in men as in women. This is probably because many cases have been caused by exposure to asbestos at work. Asbestos and mesothelioma
Unusually for cancer, we do know what causes the majority of cases of mesothelioma. It is most often linked to exposure to asbestos. We have known of a link between asbestos and lung disease since the beginning of the 18th century. But the link with mesothelioma has only been known since the 1960's. Unfortunately, the number of cases of mesothelioma in the UK each year is expected to rise sharply over the next 20 years because of the heavy use of asbestos in industry from the end of the second world war up until the mid 1970s.
Between 7 and 8 out of every 10 people (70–80%) diagnosed with mesothelioma say they have been in contact with asbestos. Your risk is greater if you were exposed to large amounts of it from an early age for a very long period of time. But there are some patients that say they have no history of any heavy exposure to asbestos.
Remember: Many people who develop mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure may be eligible for compensation. You should talk to a solicitor about this as early as possible. Your specialist doctor or nurse may be able to give you some information on this from their dealings with other mesothelioma patients. What is asbestos?
Asbestos is an insulating material that is heat and fire resistant. In the past, asbestos was used widely in the
* Building industry
* Ship building industry
* Manufacture of household appliances
* Motor industry
* Power stations
* Telephone exchanges
So most cases of mesothelioma occur in men who have worked in manufacturing using asbestos or used asbestos products, particularly in construction or engineering. The use of asbestos was very heavy in the years after the war (after 1945). Mesothelioma may not develop until 15 - 40 years after you have been exposed to asbestos, which is why we are seeing an increase in cases now. The number of cases is expected to peak around 2020 and then start to decline.
There are three main types of asbestos: blue, brown and white. Blue and brown asbestos are strongly linked with mesothelioma. They have been banned since the late 1980's and cannot be imported into the UK. White asbestos is now also thought to be harmful. The use of all asbestos was banned in 1999 in the UK.
How does asbestos cause mesothelioma?
Asbestos is made up of tiny fibres. You can breathe these fibres in when you come into contact with asbestos. The fibres work their way into the pleura, lining the lung. They irritate the pleura and damage the cells that the pleura are made of. Some of the fibres that have been breathed in can be coughed up and swallowed. This is probably the cause of peritoneal mesothelioma.
If you have been exposed to asbestos, your family may also have been exposed. Asbestos fibres can be carried home on your clothes. Research studies have confirmed that the family of people exposed to asbestos also have a higher risk of developing mesothelioma.
Radiation
Pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma has been known to develop after exposure to a type of radiation called thorium dioxide (Thorotast). This was used until the 1950's in some X-ray tests.
Other chemicals
A mineral found in Turkey called Zeolite may cause mesothelioma.
The SV40 virus
There has been some research into a virus called SV40 (the SV stands for 'simian virus'). There is a lot of dispute amongst scientists about this and it isn't generally accepted as a cause. It seems more likely that the virus doesn't cause mesothelioma. It is possible that SV40 may help to increase risk if you've been exposed to another more major risk factor. Doctors call this a 'co-factor'. But SV40 certainly hasn't been proved to be a co-factor so far. In any case, it is far less important a risk factor than asbestos.
Screening for mesothelioma
Screening means testing people for early stages of a disease before they have any symptoms. There is no screening programme for mesothelioma in the UK. Before screening for any type of cancer can be carried out, doctors must have an accurate test to use. The test must be reliable in picking up cancers that are there. And it must not give a positive result in people who do not have cancer.
If screening were to be introduced for mesothelioma, the test would have to be simple, quick and not too expensive. Diagnosing mesothelioma can be difficult. The usual tests for lung diseases often appear to be negative with mesothelioma.
As only about 2,000 cases are diagnosed each year, it is not sensible to screen everyone in the country for such a rare disease.
It would be more cost effective to screen people who are thought to be at a higher risk of mesothelioma. But to do that, we have to be alioma. But if you have these symptoms, see your doctor. This is particularly important if you have been exposed to asbestos in the past.
